BASE LAYER BASICS
How do I keep warm?
Layering is the first rule of keeping warm in a cold enviroment. Layers enable a person to better regulate their body temperature throughout the day as conditions change. For example, if the temperature rises by lunch, you can remove a layer or layers of clothing to prevent over-heating. You can also prevent excessive perspiration by removing layers. Moisture is the enemy of staying warm. You must stay dry to retain heat. As a result, how quickly moisture is moved and evaporated is an important component of keeping warm.
Fabric Choice
Fabric choice is an important part of any base layer. Fabric type and construction determine how well a base layer tranfers moisture and retains warmth. There are many types of fabrics such as synthetic (polyester for example), wool, silk and cotton. Since moisture retention is a major component of keeping warm, it is important to consider how materials will work with moisture. Cotton is a hydrophilic or water loving fiber with a very high absorption and retention rate. Cotton retains up to %%?? of its weight in moisture. Thus, cotton is the least desirable material for a baselayer.
Form Fit or Loose Fit?
From fitting base layers provide greater warmth retention than do loose fitting garments particularly during high activity. The form fitting base layer will serve to better transfer moisture away from your skin. This will keep you dryer and warmer. A form fitting garment will also move with you providing greater mobility and comfort.
Loose fittng base layers provide a more relaxed comfortable feel. These base layers tend to be better suited for less strenuous activities.
